Arctic Panorama Lodge

Northern Lights Adventure in the Lyngen Alps

The fjords of the Lyngen Alps turn a glassy blue colour as winter draws in. By now the snow line has fallen from the peaks to the shores and covered the mountains in a thick white blanket of snow. The Lyngen Alps cover a vast area of Arctic Norway, yet much of this snow remains untouched except for the odd lonely track left by a Nordic skier or arctic animal.

For a privileged few travellers, the endlessly beautiful and remote terrain of the Lyngen Alps could also be yours to enjoy. This holiday in Norway's Arctic region begins and ends in Trømso, a northern city with small town charm, with boutique shops, cosy restaurants, inviting bars and several attractions all within walking distance and embraced within a friendly atmosphere, before heading to a secluded island at the entrance to the Lyngenfjord. Here you will find the cosy Arctic Panorama Lodge, where guests can enjoy a personal service and access to winter adventures including dog sledding, and from November through January, whale watching. With little or no light pollution, the Northern Lights are often seen in their full glory in the night skies above the lodge. An inclusive stay here offers adventure, relaxation and a chance to leave normal life behind – completely!

WHAT, WHERE & WHEN

DAY 1:

On arrival at Tromsø airport make your way to the city centre hotel. There is a choice between the regular shuttle bus service, taking approximately 10-15 minutes and costing about £10 per person each way. The bus stops at four locations in Tromso and tickets can be purchased on board. Alternatively, take a taxi for the short journey directly to your hotel, or we can book a private transfer where you will be met on arrival and escorted to the city hotel. In the evening enjoy exploring the city with our recommendations for places to visit and eat. And later try to catch your first glimpses of the Northern Lights in the dark skies.

DAY 2:

In the morning you can explore Tromsø at your leisure - visit the Arctic Cathedral and the many museums like the Polar Museum, Arctic University Museum of Norway, The Science centre, Troll Museum and the Northern Norway Art Museum. Take the cable car to Fjellheisen for amazing views over the city, taste the local beer at Mack brewery and watch the seals feeding at Polaria. There is plenty to keep you busy before you are collected from the hotel in the afternoon for a transfer to the Arctic Panorama Lodge, located on the island Uløya in the eastern part of Lyngen Fjord. The journey takes just over 3 hours and offers the perfect chance to acclimatise to the stunning Arctic scenery.

You’ll have time to settle into your accommodation. With just six rooms and six suites in total, you will be among a small group of travellers. The lodge makes full use of its position overlooking the surrounding fjord and mountains. The wide panoramic window opens up to stunning scenery, and ample chances to enjoy the view by day, when elk and reindeer can wander past or occasionally whales can be seen in the fjord, or at night, when the Aurora comes out to play.

Each day a 3-course traditional dinner will be served in the dining room, prepared using local ingredients by the chef, plus tea and coffee, hot chocolate and cakes are served every afternoon, You’ll have the chance to meet and chat with the lodge owners Aud and Svein who will do their best to ensure you enjoy your stay.

Staying at: Arctic Panorama Lodge

DAY 3:

After a good night’s sleep, an enjoyable breakfast - and those wonderful views. Today you’ll join an Arctic Adventure. Depending on weather conditions and snowfall, head out into the surrounding wilderness on a dog-sledding trip with a pack of local husky dogs. You’ll get to drive your own team of eager dogs and enjoy the silence as you travel through the white snow on trails. Two people share a sled, with plenty of opportunities to swap over and take turns in driving. During this trip, a delightful wilderness lunch is included. At the end of the journey make sure to show your thanks by giving the huskies a big hug, they love it. If the snowfall isn’t sufficient for the dog sledding to go ahead, then you have the chance to join a whale safari which operates from November to January.

In the evening, enjoy storytelling around a campfire in a traditional teepee style tent used by the Sámi people. Here you’ll get a chance to learn about the rich culture of northern Norway and the Sámi culture with help from a native guide who provides an insight into the way of life of living in the north as a reindeer herder.

DAY 4:

The island location offers the perfect opportunity for today’s whale safari. To get a view from the water of this magnificent setting and the local wildlife which includes orca and humpback whales is a special experience. Your hosts own the boat and have years of experience in these waters, giving the best chance to spot these majestic animals. If you get a little chilly whilst searching for the whales, you can sit in the heated cabin until that magical moment when the whales appear.

Throughout your stay make full use of the spa facilities at the lodge. Sit in the outdoor hot tub and admire the views across the fjord or the northern lights in the skies above, relax weary muscles in the traditional sauna, but dare you take a dip in the fjord afterwards for that real sauna experience?

DAY 5:

After breakfast, enjoy your last moments in this wonderful setting before taking the return journey back to Tromsø, arriving mid-afternoon for a one night stay. The rest of the day and evening is free to discover more of this northern city, perhaps join a northern lights chase in the evening, or an Aurora dinner cruise in the fjord.

DAY 6:

Today you’ll leave Tromsø, returning to the airport for your flight home. Or extend your stay with additional nights and excursions or a stay elsewhere in Arctic Norway.

Please note, this specific itinerary is based on the Whale season which runs from November to the end of January, so the focus during this period will be searching for the whales in the Lyngenfjord. After this time, you have the choice of dog-sledding in the arctic wilderness, with up to 3 hours of mushing your own team of Alaskan huskies or you may wish to swap dog power for horsepower, and journey on snowmobiles, often in the evening searching for the magical northern lights. Also during this time, slip on snow shoes and experience the beauty and silence of the unspoilt Arctic wilderness.

The 3 night stay at Arctic Panorama Lodge operates with a Friday arrival. There is also a 4 night stay which is based on a Monday arrival at the lodge.

The Aurora Borealis is a natural phenomenon and so we cannot guarantee you will witness it during your trip. The Northern Lights season begins in September and ends during April. Temperatures, colours, snowfall and hours of darkness vary considerably during this period. Compared to other Arctic destinations, Tromsø has a mild climate due to the presence of the Gulf Stream.

My family and I really enjoyed our activities starting with a Northern Lights boat trip with dinner on our first evening in Tromso. This was hosted by a delightful couple who were so friendly and knowledgeable and lucky us we had a great viewing of the northern lights. Dinner was superb with beautiful cod which had been caught off the boat that day.

Northern Lights Adventure in the Lyngen Alps

An absolutely amazing trip completely surpassed all of our expectations. Everything ran so smoothly right from the booking process, airport pick ups, hotel accommodation through to the booked activities at the lodge. I would highly recommend this trip and a stay at the Arctic Panorama Lodge, you wont be disappointed. Now just need to plan a trip back!

The whole trip from start to finish went very smoothly. The Arctic Panorama lodge, the hosts and helpers were all fabulous. The lodge was extremely comfortable and the views stunning. All the excursions were well organized and what was lovely was that it wasn't run to a rigid time table like you can get on bigger organized tours. I would certainly recommend it.

Four of us travelled to the Arctic Panorama Lodge and had a wonderful time. We were incredibly fortunate with the weather which was perfect throughout our stay and we had 2 nights of spectacular Northern lights displays. Of course, you never know if you will see them, we were just lucky, but we enjoyed all the activities which gave us the opportunity to get off the beaten track and appreciate the stunning scenery. Sven, the host at the lodge, is a great character and full of stories. The lodge itself is comfortable and warm with hearty local food. Even the clothing they provided was great and kept us cosy Magnetic North were also very organised. We found them helpful and the trip good value. If we had chosen a holiday without full board, it would have been expensive as prices are high in Norway for food and drink

We have just got back from our amazing trip to Arctic Norway seeing the Northern Lights and the killer whales. Angela at Magnetic North completely "nailed the brief", gave us excellent advice and nothing was too much trouble. As a result our holiday fulfilled all expectations!!! The itinerary worked perfectly, the accommodation at the Arctic Panorama Lodge was fantastic and the sights at the Lyngen Alps were breathtaking!!! We can not recommend Magnetic North highly enough!!!

The lodge was amazing and we were lucky enough to see the Northern lights on day one. Travel from Tromsø to the lodge does take a while but Svein was great company and he even introduced us to the delights of brown cheese waffles on one of the ferries! The lodge itself offers cosy family style accommodation where guests are encouraged to share common spaces and all sit together at meal times. The food, all made by Aud is FANTASTIC! In just 3 days we had some real Norwegian classics; moose meatballs, fresh fish caught in the fjord that day and fårikål (lamb & cabbage stew). Breakfast was continental style with home made bread and delicious smoked salmon from the fjord. There are a couple of lovely marked hikes straight from the lodge that take you just a couple of hours and if you want something more adventurous then Svein will be happy to advise. All in all our 3 night trip was too short, but we will definitely be planning a return visit.

We had a super experience, family of 4, Mum, Dad, two girls in their 20's. Arranging the travel through MN, nothing was too much trouble. Booking seats for all flights and information about airport baggage handling in Oslo. We missed the chance to book London Tromso direct, but the stop in Oslo became part of the trip. There is a good 3.5 hour trip from Tromso airport to accommodation, with three ferries, the last a fishing boat, all part of the adventure. We were hosted by Sven and Ut at the Arctic Panorama Lodge in Skjervoy between Christmas and New Year 2015. The accommodation, think high class ski chalet, so clean and with good communal areas to get to know the other guests. The bedrooms were a reasonable size, the bathroom excellent, so you can get away from the others too :-) The food, typical Norwegian, what else! Well prepared. A tip :If you are a vegetarian be sure to make that clear in advance. We took the Snow mobile experience with Anders on Skjervoy, what a nice man, made us feel so welcome and the Dog Sled Safari (with Christina) including tacking up the sled and dogs, driving, then untacking and feeding the dogs at the end of the day; a unique and memorable experience. The clothing supplied was excellent (books and thermal suit) you will need good gloves and thermals (think skiing in January). We even saw a few northern lights. So if you have a bit of a spirit of adventure, willing to go with the flow and assimilate, but with a hot shower and comfortable accommodation at the end of the day this is for you.

This was a most excellent experience in beautiful Northern Norway. The team at Magnetic North could not have been more helpful and special thanks to Kirsi for taking the time and trouble in answering our particular needs on the trip. It is rare these days to find a company that is genuinely committed to helping you have the best experience on your travels and I would have no hesitation in recommending them to others. We also got to see the Northern Lights which were truly breathtaking !
