Kakslauttanen Resort

Autumn Northern Lights Holiday at Kakslauttanen

Ruska season in Finnish Lapland sets the trees ablaze in the colours of Fall. Russet orange, ruby reds and golden yellows combine to spectacular effect in the forests and fells of Northern Finland making way for the first flutters of snowfall. This Autumn getaway offers adventure and cosy log cabin accommodation deep in the high latitudes of Finland. You'll stay in a log cabin, with an open fire and sauna, and enjoy a selection of outdoor adventures which can be customized to your requirements including horse-back riding and husky hiking. After dark, look up - as you may see the colours of the Northern Lights with its flicker of greens, purples and blues.

Day 1:

Arrive in Lapland travelling to Ivalo in the North of Finland. Transfer to your accommodation and settle into your cosy log cabin. You won't find a TV inside but you will find a relaxing open fire and your own private sauna, a staple of Finnish life. Once you're all settled in why not start your Finnish holiday with a sauna or explore your surrounds? Dinner will be served in the resort's restaurant. When darkness descends, check the night sky for any appearances of the Northern Lights overhead.

Staying at: Kakslauttanen Resort

Day 2:

Venture into Finland's Ruska landscape, at its most vivid at the end of August and September. Today you'll enjoy a guided hike accompanied by one of the local husky dogs who'll be eager to explore with you. Your hike will be near to Urho Kekkonen National Park- the largest national park in Finland where you'll experience some beautiful views. Upon your return to the kennel you may even get chance to hug some of the new puppies. In the evening the search for the Northern Lights will continue, and what better way to do so than by horse and carriage? This 1.5 hour excursion explores the surrounding silent forests, travelling by wooden horse sleigh pulled by two sturdy Finnhorses. During the tour you'll stop for hot drinks and a chance to learn about Finnish culture.

Day 3:

Another day for outdoor adventures this time on the Ivalo River. Today you will spend 6-8 hours on a guided canoeing excursion stopping for lunch en route and enjoying the colours of Fall and silence of Finnish wilderness.

If you'd prefer an alternative tour, we can tailor the trip to your preferences. Alternative activities include: horse-back riding (suitable for beginners), gold-panning, ATV Quad biking, fishing, river rafting and more. Just get in touch with the team and we'll be happy to assist.

Tonight we recommend upgrading to a glass igloo for the final night in the Arctic to enjoy panoramic views of the starry night sky and hopefully the Aurora borealis.

Day 4:

Transfer to Ivalo Airport for your homeward journey. Alternatively, why not add extra nights either in the cabin or a glass igloo. The holiday can also be extended with a tour across the northern border to Norway and the Arctic Sea at Kirkenes. Get in touch with our team to find out more and to customise your adventure.

Autumn Northern Lights Holiday at Kakslauttanen

My mother and I went on a Finnish lapland adventure in Ivalo, and we had an amazing and relaxing time. The stay at Kakslauttanen Resort was comfortable (in the lodge) and very safe, and the activities were well-planned and enjoyable. The only negative point was that we didn't see the Northern Lights due to the cloudy weather. We really enjoyed berries picking and hiking in the woodlands. I also highly recommend the Sami museum and the boat cruise to the Holy Island - it was all very fascinating and eye-opening. Angela and her team were professional and responsive, before and during the trip. It was a pleasure liaising with her, as well as using the app Vamos, which downloads all the trip documents, passes and tickets as well as itinerary which saved me a lot of hassle. Overall a great trip, thank you so much to Angela + team!
