Winter Lodge Adventure in Alta

Northern Lights Break at Alten Lodge

Discover the delights of the frozen north, where whales come to feed, huskies love to run and the magical lights of the Aurora Borealis casts a spell over all that come to marvel at its beauty. This is Alta and you are invited to join in the wonders that make this such a special place.

Day 1

Touchdown in Alta, the the self proclaimed ‘City of the Northern Lights'. Here, snow covered mountains, frozen rivers and the haunting winter twilight create a wonderful backdrop to this beautiful part of Norway.

Just fifteen minutes outside of the city, on a mountainside overlooking the Alta Fjord, sits your arctic escape for the next three nights, Alten Lodge. Spend the rest of the day relaxing in your new surroundings before stepping out for your Arctic wilderness experience in the evening.

With crunchy snow underfoot, take the short walk to discover a large Lavvo (tent) where an open fire keeps the night's chill at bay. Your host for the evening will prepare a tasty hot reindeer dish, coffee brewed over the bonfire and traditional cake. If you are truly lucky the Northern Lights will make an appearance overhead.

Staying at: Alten Lodge

Day 2

After a hearty Scandinavian breakfast, join a breathtaking trip out onto Alta fjord on an open topped RIB (rapid inflatable boat). The dramatic scenery and ever-changing skies are only matched by the possibility of seeing the gentle giants of the sea, whales, as they feed on the local herring. Your guide will endeavour to find these majestic creatures, but if they remain elusive there are numerous opportunities to see the many other delights of nature that call these waters and surrounding countryside their home. Hear stories of Alta past, from cave drawings, to WWII, to the modern day.

A hot lunch of homemade soup and traditional bread is served back at the lodge. Spend the afternoon relaxing in front of the crackling log burner and enjoy the views from the sofas of the open plan living area.

Your evening starts with dinner at the fine Restaurant Stakeriet, in Alta, where a 2 course set menu is created from the finest local ingredients, with a nod towards Nordic cuisine. The rest of your evening is spent in search of the wonders of the arctic, the Northern lights. Your English speaking guide will brief you on the myths and tales that surround these naturally occurring phenomenon, before climbing onboard a comfortable mini van and the hunt is on. Through the next few hours you will travel to a variety of different view points to try and see the lights as they dance across the dark skies above. Your guide will also be able to help you with your camera setting to try and get that all important photograph.

Day 3

A special day awaits as you make some new friends, a pack of adorable huskies. The frozen landscape of the Norway winter is like nothing you will ever see, glittering in the sunlight it is a sight to behold. There is no better way to experience this beauty than from the back of a dog sled, whether as a passenger or as a musher, driving a team of huskies. After receiving a full safety briefing, and explanation on how to drive a team of excitable huskies, your guide will take you out into the into the snowy forests and onto the thick ice that covers the Alta river. While the huskies love to run in the cold temperatures, you will be equipped with a warm outdoor suit to keep the cold at bay. Enjoy the silence of dog paws and sled runners across the snowy ground.

After a hot soup lunch back at the lodge, spend the afternoon at leisure or maybe choose an extra excursion. It might be cold outside but don’t let that stop you from stepping out and trying the traditional sauna, which should be followed by a dip in the fjord but a roll in the snow will be suffice, only for the brave.

This evening return to Alta for one last time for your delicious dinner at Restaurant Stakeriet. Spend a little time exploring this arctic city or maybe book another hunt for the northern lights, this time by snowmobile or dog sled, ask our team for some ideas.
