Northern Lights Cabin Holiday in the Lyngen Alps

The region of Lyngenfjord lies between the Arctic cities of Tromso and Alta in the far north of Norway, complete with contrasts and wild nature in every direction. The Alpine mountains, glaciers, fjords, islands, lush valleys and open plateaus provide the perfect backdrop for lots of amazing adventures including whale watching, snowmobile trips, dog-sledding safaris and witnessing the mesmerising Northern Lights.

At the tip of the Lyngen peninsula, with breathtaking views of the shimmering fjord and majestic mountains sits a collection of cabins in the small fishing village Nord-Lenangen. The remote location offers guests pure nature and arctic silence, while taking part in thrilling winter activities and enjoying Northern Norwegian hospitality at its best.

SUGGESTED ITINERARY

WHAT, WHERE & WHEN

DAY 1:

After arriving in Tromso, or you may already have spent some time in this Arctic city, which we can easily assist you with. You will be met at 14.30 (a later time can be arranged) and transferred on a scenic two hour journey including a ferry ride across Ullsfjorden to Svensby, taking you to the cosy cabin accommodation overlooking the fjord in the Lyngen Alps.

Settle into your cabin and have a short time to relax before enjoying a light evening meal. Afterwards you’ll join a short Northern Lights workshop, learning some useful tips to best capture the magic of the Aurora Borealis on your camera. The excursion takes 1-2 hours and takes place inside and outdoors. With luck you may view the dance of the aurora in the night sky.

DAY 2:

Breakfast is served in the restaurant, from where you’ll also make a lunch pack for your day excursion. The day begins with a snowshoe hike to the northernmost tip of the Lyngen peninsula, Lyngstuva. The trek takes you along the coast with spectacular views over the open sea and snow covered mountains. Once you reach the basecamp, you’ll stop for lunch and hot beverages. The excursion takes approximately 4 hours. Once back at the accommodation, you’ll have time to relax or explore the area at leisure. Each afternoon there are waffles, cakes and hot drinks available for guests in the restaurant area.

In the early evening a two-course dinner will be served, giving you a taste of the local and regional cuisine. After dinner you can relax in the sauna and outdoor jacuzzi while keeping an eye out for the Northern Lights as you unwind in the hot bubbling water.

DAY 3:

Today your adventure continues with a snowmobiling safari. The guide will provide you with warm clothing and information regarding safety and how to drive the snowmobile. Once set, you head off into the arctic wilderness with stops made at several viewpoints to take pictures and swap drivers. A stop is also made for snacks and hot drinks during the trip. The excursion duration is 2 hours, but If you prefer dog-sledding instead, then this can be arranged for an additional supplement. It is also possible to add dog-sledding and other winter activities along with the snowmobiling, such as whale watching ( November to 15 January), cross-country skiing, reindeer sledding and sami culture, visit the Aurora Spirit distillery and a northern lights snowmobile safari for an additional charge.

Back at the cabin you can relax, enjoy snacks in the restaurant or venture out using the snowshoes and kicksledges available for guests to use during their stay.

In the early evening, you gather for dinner before the final adventure, a Northern Lights Safari by snowshoe. The guide leads you to a magnificent viewing point over the Lyngen Alps and sea. Here there is no light pollution, making it an excellent spot to watch and photograph the aurora. Warm drinks and headlamps are provided for you.

DAY 4:

Your final morning and after breakfast it’s time to return to Tromso, either to the airport or to extend your stay in the city or further afield. We’d be delighted to advise you of the different options possible.

Please note, this 4 day and 3 night stay in the Lyngen Alps is based on a Thursday arrival. It is also possible to stay on a 5 day and 4 night package giving you more time to participate in optional activities or just relax and enjoy the arctic silence.

From £1,592 per person (excluding flights), based on a minimum of two people sharing a 3 bedroom cabin at X Lyngen on full board basis, with return transfers and activities included.
