Truest Winter: A venture into Norway's glacial heart
The Sognefjord is the deepest and longest of the Norwegian fjords. Its turquoise waters and snow covered mountains hiding centuries old glacial outlets, provide a sharp contrast to its summer months.
This tour celebrates winter on the Sognefjord and continues inland to the remarkable Jostedalsbreen National Park. Here we’ll discover remoteness and quiet travelling by skis and snowshoes through the white wilderness. We’ll step onto Europe’s largest inland glacier and climb waterfalls, frozen at the moment of winter’s arrival.
- Embrace winter in the fjords and mountains of Western Norway
- Make tracks through the pristine snow of Jostedal National Park by ski and snowshoe
- Step out onto Northern Europe’s largest glacier and venture beneath its turquoise floor
- Enjoy the cosiness of a log cabin and a Norwegian fjordside hotel

Itinerary:
Day one
This trip begins in the cultural city of Bergen. We whole heartedly recommend that you spend some time here before the tour begins. Magnetic North can organise your accommodation and activities in Bergen at the beginning or end of the tour (not included in the price). Early afternoon on day one of the tour, we’ll meet at the ferry terminal in Bergen and take the Express boat to Sogndal. This journey will introduce you to the Sognefjord and its surrounding snow-covered mountains. You’ll be met at the quay in Sogndal and taken to your lodge. Settle in to the lodge and enjoy a home-cooked evening meal before joining the rest of the group around the fire for your introduction to Friluftsliv.
Day two
Your guide will meet you in the morning to take you out to explore the wild areas of the Jostedal National Park by ski or snow-shoe. We’ll make our own tracks in the untouched snow and enjoy spectacular views across the valley.
In the evening we’ll build a fire in the snow and cook our evening meal under the stars.
Day three
Today is all about the frozen wilderness that is Jostedalsbreen, Northern Europe’s largest glacier at 487 square kilometres. We’ll visit one of its glacial outlets at Nigardsbreen, where it hides a spectacular ice cave that forms every winter, and discovered only in 2007 by a scientist. You can also try ice-climbing on frozen waterfalls today if you wish. In the evening we’ll transfer to our fjord hotel where we’ll meet Bård our host before enjoying dinner of local produce.
Day four
Today you can take at your own pace. Enjoy some downhill or cross-country skiing at a local ski-centre close to the hotel. For more advanced skiers, we can arrange a day of back-country skiing with a qualified guide to explore the surrounding mountains. In the evening we’ll enjoy another meal in the hotel.
Day five
We’ll leave our hotel after breakfast and return to Bergen via Sogndal.
