Where is the 'Magnetic North'?
The Magnetic North isn’t a destination in the traditional sense. It’s as much a way of thinking as a place to visit. Our compass points north and our trips are in the northern hemisphere, but more importantly, we look for ways that our guests can gain knowledge and experience in different settings. The Magnetic North is home to people who can help us do this.
Who are Magnetic North Travel?
We are a specialist tour operator owned and managed by three families, which each regard the Magnetic North as their escape from modern life. We wanted to share this with others and came together to set up Magnetic North Travel.
How do tailor-made holidays work?
We’re able to offer flexibility in creating your perfect holiday. Some of our tours have fixed departure dates, but many of our clients are looking for tailor made itineraries to suit their budget and sense of adventure. We take you through this process and find out what you are looking for and present you with a proposal based on your wishes. You'll travel independantly and will join other guests for activities.
What style of accommodation will I stay in?
Our holidays feature a mix of cabin, hotel and bed and breakfast accommodation. We know your hosts well and we're confident they’ll provide you with a warm welcome (even at minus 20 below) and comfortable lodgings.
Can I buy gift vouchers to redeem against Magnetic North holidays?
Yes, you can. We can also provide special gift packs at no extra cost if your holiday is a present. Please contact us for more information.
What will I eat?
Magnetic North puts you in touch with the landscapes in which you travel. Eating food which is cultivated in surrounding areas and growing in the wild is an important part of our experiences. These change with the seasons too. So while we can’t promise what you’ll eat during our trips, we can promise that it will be of the highest quality and give you a real flavour of where you are.
How big are groups?
We offer holidays for groups of any size. If you are travelling alone we will encourage you to join a group departure or offer you a tailor made itinerary.
How do I book?
Once you’ve chosen your trip, get in touch with us by emailing us or calling 0845 5195 242. We’ll send you a booking form to return to us along with a 30% deposit. The balance is due 56 days before departure.
Are flights included?
Transport to the destinations isn’t included in the price. So you are free to choose the slowest or fastest route to the start of your tour as you please. It also means you can fly with the carrier of your choice according to your preferred level of comfort. This will often help you to save money. Of course, we’ll give you all the information you need about how to travel to the destination and suggestions for flight and train departures.
Are your holidays suitable for families?
We have a selection of family holidays which are suitable for children. Each holiday stipulates a minimum age – some family holidays have a minimum age of 5 or 11. We also ensure the accommodation is suitable for children and there are options for self-catering for many of our tours. If you’re not sure, then please get in touch. We can also arrange tailor made holidays for your family group.
I like skiing, but I’m not very experienced. What is the level?
The emphasis of our trips is enjoyment. We want people to experience the outdoors without feeling compelled to compete or take unnecessary risks. Each trip has a grading which gives you some information about previous experience or minimum fitness levels. Many of our trips do not require previous experience as we ensure our guides support and encourage each participant. There are also opportunities to participate in more advanced activities such as back-country skiing in order to venture further into wilderness. Currently, we offer these as tailor-made itineraries and we’d be happy to put together a proposal for your group.
Is my money safe with you?
In order to provide clients with complete peace of mind, Magnetic North Travel Ltd is a member of Protected Travel Services. Your money is held in a trust account and is used for the purpose of fulfilling your booking. Any money you pay will go into the Protected Travel Services client account at HSBC. This is an account which we cannot access directly. The only people authorised to sign on the account are the Trustees from a highly respectable firm of chartered accountants. The money stays in the account until you’ve returned from your holiday. So your money is completely safe from start to finish. You will be able to see any money you have paid to us by following the booking link which we will send to you immediately after you have booked your holiday. Do I need travel insurance?
All guests need to take out travel insurance to participate in our holidays.
Will I see the Northern Lights?
You will have a chance of seeing the Northern Lights if you travel to the right region at the right time of the year (between October and March). We cannot guarantee that you’ll view the lights. Many different factors come into play such as weather and cloud cover. However, we’ll endeavour to ensure you have the best opportunties to see the Lights as possible. Our guides are experienced at detecting the best conditions on the day of your excursion. All excursions leave in the evening. If you’re feeling brave, some guides will keep going all night until they find the best place to view the Lights! If you decide that you’d like to do an additional Northern Lights excursion while you’re abroad, we can organise this from the UK.
